Finished Size 36" Square
Wool Fabrics needed:
(use an assortment of wools - textures, plaids, mottled and solids!)
16" square red
8" square dark orange
6" square of light/medium orange
8" x 10" purple
8" x 10" mustard/gold
4" square blue
16" x 24" (fat quarter) green
2 yards dark brown mottled fabric for background, half square triangles
and binding fabric
***Assorted scraps of fabric for the borders:
(the following measurements are for the total amount needed in yardage, but I recommend using many, many different fabrics! Dig through your scrap bin or host a 3" square fabric exchange! You will need a minimum size of 3" square of fabric - but if you host a fabric square exchange - ask for 3 1/2" squares so that you can cut everything down to the correct size and ensure all squares are the minimum required size needed!)
If you are purchasing new fabrics to make your half square triangles for the borders, I suggest looking for fat sixteenth (9" x 11") or fat eighth (9" x 22") size pieces of fabric. A Moda Layer cake would work well also. Charm squares would work - but expect a lot of waste - or left over small scraps for your scrap basket. Gather or purchase a minimum of 2 yards total fabric for the border. Remember the more variety of fabrics you use - the scrappier the finished project! I also used only medium and dark value fabrics in the borders!
If you are doing a fabric square exchange or pulling fabrics from your stash - you will need a total of 130 squares of fabric that measure a minimum of 3" square
***We used Valdani size 12 Pearle Cotton floss in our project. Here are the colors we used: O 540 which is a very antique greenish/black thread, 510 Orange, 78 Red, 12 Brown and 154 Tan.
***Size 24 Chenille needle
***1 1/4 yard Lite Steam A Seam 2 or other fusible web product can also be used in this project if you prefer. If not - freezer paper is recommended for tracing your pattern shapes
***1 1/4 yard backing fabric (with at least 40" of usable width!!!)
***40" square batting
***2" finished size half square triangle papers can be used - but our instructions have included easy steps to make half square triangles for your borders without the use of papers!
